I have been training and working with women for over 12 years and I have seen in most cases that the struggle to be healthy typically comes with confusion around eating right for their body types. There is SO much confusing information out there on the “right way” to eat to get the body you want. What I have seen, is most diet plans give us some quick results for weight loss, only to gain weight back the moment you “slip up” and eat that first basket of chips and salsa! Sound familiar? Of course it does! It’s incredibly difficult to remain faithful to a diet as a way of life because it is so restricting simply because you cannot eat food you do not enjoy as a way of life. There is no sustainability in that! What about celebrations and dinners out? Wouldn’t it be nice to just find the middle ground and eat moderately and enjoy yourself? It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Fit & FREE is my signature program that I created as an in-person event tackling the hard questions of WHY RESTRICTIVE, CALORIE-DEFICIT DIETING AND LONG CARDIO INTENSE WORKOUTS DO NOT WORK. I also wanted to help women work thru some of the most common body image issues we face as we become mothers, age and get on and off the dieting roller coaster. The event was a huge success and I did not expect the feedback to be that women wanted so much more information than our 3-hour seminar allowed.

This program is the ultimate solution to the on-and-off again dieting roller coaster that we have all gone back to in desperation for years. I call it the Restrict-Binge- Failure Cycle. The fact of the matter is—dieting, meal plans and a trainer that tells you to log hours of your time in the gym is NOT THE LONG-TERM answer to getting your best, healthiest body. Don’t get me wrong-sometimes those things get us instant-gratification with some rapid weight loss, BUT once you get off of that strict meal plan and grueling workout routine, it is extremely difficult to maintain those results with any sense of normalcy. What happens to most women once they get off their restrictive diet or strenuous fitness program is-they gain the weight back eventually. Sometimes, even more than before. They blame themselves for not having willpower or mental strength to keep the weight off. However, what they do not realize is that as we age, our body responds counter to the old, calories in/calories out, loads of cardio-way we were always taught to diet and exercise. Our metabolisms actually backfire on us when continue in this pattern!
What other programs do not take into account is that there is NOT one blueprint way to eat or workout that works for all of us. Wouldn’t it be dreamy if there was? That’s why ultimately, when we are on a strict meal plan or a grueling fitness regimen-we end up feeling defeated after hours in the gym and tiny “clean” meals that make us grumpy…and worst yet--we see no lasting physical change! “Since I worked out with Nicki in person years ago, I trust her knowledge and her heart behind physical fitness. Hi, I’m Nicki Wilson. When I graduated Baylor University in 2002 with a social work degree, I loved working with people on how to achieve goals thru difficult circumstances. I found it to be my life’s calling.
During my early career years, I was also getting into health and fitness as a group-ex instructor and personal trainer. Funny enough, I found that social work and health & fitness go hand-in-hand in many ways.
For me, working with women takes a complex, rich, multi-level approach because, well…that is how women are!
After my first baby, I saw my body change into something unrecognizable to me—I had always been a smaller, thin person with the ability to control the way my body looked with relative ease. And I LOVED exercise. But nursing did not help me lose any of the extra weight (despite what people told me), and lack of sleep and the pressure I put on myself left me in a mentally unhealthy place. Obsessed with getting my “old body” back became my daily fixation…and I was annoying and unpleasant and totally insecure. And I EVENTUALLY lost the weight only to get pregnant immediately again. The cycle continued in that pattern. Body dysmorphia, obsession and fixation on getting my previous body back. By the time I was 33 years old, I was pregnant for the 3rd time and decided that enough was enough and I was no longer going to put myself on the emotional roller coaster of this quest for perfection! So, I changed my tune-I got over chasing my old body and learned to love and fuel my new, 3x mama, mid-thirties body. And I’ve not looked back since! Maybe you can relate, or maybe it is something different for you-but the fact of the matter is-we are all created beautifully and we have to learn to love and appreciate our bodies through each stage of our life!
Throughout the past several years, I have found that in order to really achieve long-lasting, sustainable health results-we not only have to work on the physical body (which actually I find to be the top of the pyramid) , but we also have to spend time tending to some healthy mindsets, breaking old habits, and becoming less fixated on perfection and more focused on action that leads to consistency.
